Here is a well known picture of this great Yogi. He is one of the great masters of this modern day. I only wish these teachers could live longer lives so we could all benefit from their wisdom with direct contact.

T. Krishnamacharya

He was also a real practitioner as you can tell by just watching him do Yoga. He could hold really amazing powerful Yoga poses even in his late seventies. To me that is a testament to yoga and it's benefits.

His hometown of Mysore is a also one of my favorite little towns in India to visit. It has numerous temples and palaces to see and an all around classic Indian feel about it.
 
You can still practice in a 300 year old temple and climb  The famous pilgrimage point of interest Chumundi hill.


If you have the chance definitely visti Mysore South India if any reason at all to just see and meet the wonderful people there. You will find some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.

 


 


History of this lineage.

I still go back to Krishnamacharya as the main teacher of this form. Though Power Yoga is definitely quite different than Ashtanga. Krishnamacharya's Yoga at it's roots is still a very similar form. Some of the main differences are that the sequences are not just one set and are often taught impromptu.

So in that way they are derived from the forms that Krishnamacharya taught. As far as the dates going way back thousands of years, it is truly hard to tell. Yoga postures have definitely been around as long as the Khajuraho temples.

There is a great book about Krishnamacharya called Health, Healing and Beyond: Yoga and the Living Tradition of Krishnamacharya by T.K.V. Desikachar you can find it online through Google.
